SIFF YOUNG 2024 Launched Officially

The SIFF YOUNG 2024 was launched today with its main poster. This program will invite film and television institutions and senior filmmakers to make initial nominations, and engage senior filmmakers to form the final selection committee to recommend young representative filmworkers in the Chinese film industry. The list of candidates will be announced during the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF).
Over the years, it has always been the focus of Shanghai to care for the development of young filmmakers. The city actively provided opportunities for filmmakers to showcase their talents and advance their projects. The SIFF YOUNG program was introduced in 2021, guided by the Shanghai Film Bureau and organized by SIFF. The program aims to discover outstanding young Chinese film directors, producers, and screenwriters. With the support of policies targeting film development in Shanghai and the industry platform of SIFF, as well as the 6+1 step-by-step new talent cultivation system, this program provides comprehensive support for young filmmakers and their works to access domestic and international film industry resources.
So far, two sessions have been successfully held. The first session introduced five directors, and the second session will expand the recommendation scope to producers and screenwriters. Up to now, the program has brought to the fore 12 young filmworkers, including Dun He, Han Shuai, Li Xiaofeng, Liang Ming, Liu Xunzimo, Rao Xiaozhi, Shao Yihui, Shen Ao, Wang Jing, Wen Muye, You Xiaoying, and Zeng Guoxiang. In recent years, the selected filmmakers have continuously released many excellent films that have been well received, constantly developing new scripts, challenging new genres, and gradually emerging as an indispensable and important force in the development of Chinese cinema.
In March 2022, the first feature film THE BEST IS YET TO COME directed by Wang Jing (SIFF YOUNG 2021) was released nationwide. In October, HOME COMING directed by Rao Xiaozhi (SIFF YOUNG 2021) hit the screens and became the box office champion during the National Day holiday. In August 2023, NO MORE BETS directed by Shen Ao (SIFF YOUNG 2023) achieved a final box office of RMB 3.848 billion, becoming the box office champion of the summer season. In September, CARPE DIEM directed by Liang Ming (SIFF YOUNG 2021) was selected for the "New Directors Section" at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. In the same month, TAINTED LOVE produced by producer Dun He (SIFF YOUNG 2023) was presented in domestic theaters. The new film SHADOW directed by Li Xiaofeng (SIFF YOUNG 2023) has completed filming. There are also several projects by selected filmmakers that are currently in development, preparation, and shooting.

To offer further support to the selected filmmakers of SIFF YOUNG, the Shanghai Cultural Development Foundation has established a special support program called "Support for Outstanding Young Filmmakers to Settle in Shanghai" in the film creation project, prioritizing support for the selected filmmakers' project creation, filming, and production.

SIFF YOUNG 2024 has officially launched, and the main poster has been unveiled. This year, the program will continue to highlight industry participation. It will invite 15 recommending units and 15 recommenders to make initial nominations, and form the final selection committee to select the filmmakers for the year, to discover more outstanding young directors, producers, and screenwriters who represent the Chinese film industry.
SIFF YOUNG is a film talent support project guided by the Shanghai Film Bureau and organized by SIFF. It has been successfully held for two sessions, with the first session giving prominence to 5 directors and the second session expanding the scope to include producers and screenwriters. Currently, a total of 12 young filmmakers have been recommended, including Dun He, Han Shuai, Li Xiaofeng, Liang Ming, Liu Xunzimo, Rao Xiaozhi, Shao Yihui, Shen Ao, Wang Jing, Wen Muyue, You Xiaoying, and Zeng Guoxiang. In recent years, the selected filmmakers have created several outstanding films such as HOME COMING, THE BEST IS YET TO COME, and CARPE DIEM, gradually emerging as an indispensable and important force in the development of Chinese cinema.
