SIFF MasterClass | Conversations with Film Creators from Domestic and Abroad, A Journey through the Art of Light and Shadow in SIFF

2023-06-05

Film is a carrier for art and the soul. In front of the screen, we believe because we see, are touched because we hear, and shed tears because our souls resonate. At the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival SIFF MasterClass, four film creators from domestic and abroad, Ho-sun Chan, Ildikó Enyedi, Zhang Lu and Sho Miyake, will join us on a journey through the art of light and shadow, sharing their creative experience and revealing their explorations and insights behind the scenes of film.

The agenda of the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival SIFF MasterClass is as follows:

SIFF MasterClass with Ho-sun Chan

 Sunday, June 11, 2023 | 10:00-11:30

Jin Jue Ballroom, Crowne Plaza, Shanghai

Ho-sun CHAN, director and producer. Regarded as one of the most accomplished and successful Hong Kong filmmakers, Chan has directed many critically acclaimed films such as "Comrades: Almost a Love Story" (1996), "Perhaps Love" (2005), "The Warlords" (2007), "Dragon" (2011), "American Dreams in China" (2013), "Dearst" (2014) and "Leap" (2020). Time magazine named "Comrades: Almost a Love Story" (1996) and "Dragon" (2011) one of the top ten films of 1997 and 2012 respectively.

Forty years as a filmmaker, director Ho-sun Chan’s life has been accompanied by movies. Looking back on his life with films, the child shuttling between film sets grew up into a teenager fascinated by films, the summer intern turned to be a versatile staff in logistics or production, and the first-time director celebrating his debut “Alan and Eric” is now aiming at Chinese content of global attention. For Chan, what is a film? A blurring childish dream, a teenage burning fire, or a small boat always by side? In SIFF MasterClass with Ho-sun Chan, let’s expect his stroy about what has changed and what has not in his life with films.

SIFF MasterClass with Ildikó Enyedi

Jin Jue Ballroom, Crowne Plaza, Shanghai

Ildikó Enyedi, awards winner and Oscar nominated film director, has started her career as a concept and media artist. She was a member of the art group Indigo and the Balázs Béla Studio, the only independent film studio in Eastern Europe before 1989.

After several experimental films, her first feature, “My XX. Century” debuted in Cannes and won the Camera D’Or. In 2010 the film was chosen as one of the 12 Best Hungarian Films of All Time.

During the nineties, besides having children, she wrote and directed three more features:  “The Magic Hunter” (Venice, main competition), “Tamas and Juli” (Venice, special screening), “Simon the Magician” (Locarno, main competition) and several shorts. With these works shes won more than thirty international prizes.

After a long and painful absence - while she worked also for HBO Europe - she returned to feature film making with “On Body and Soul” which won the Golden Bear at the 2017 Berlinale and an Oscar nomination for International Film in 2018.

In 2021 to the Cannes Film Festival, with her film “The Story of My Wife” in the main competition.

She served in the main jury at Berlin, Venice, and San Sebastian Film Festivals (among others), this year she is the President of the Short Film Jury of the Cannes Film Festival. She is a member of the European and the American Film Academy. A mother of two, she lives in Budapest.

In a realm where reality and fantasy intertwine with one another, the philosophy of life is subtly reflected. The imaginative and creative Hungarian director, Ildikó Enyedi, crafts her story gently and exquisitely. At times, she reshapes history through imagination; at other times, she peeks at the human soul through their dreams. Back in 2018, Enyedi was invited to attend SIFF as a jury member of the Golden Goblet Award (Main Competition), appreciating films with the audience. Five years later, Enyedi will be present at SIFF MasterClass, sharing with us her attitude towards filmmaking.

In 2001, his short film titled "Eleven" was distinguished as a finalist in the Short Film Competition section of the prestigious 58th Venice International Film Festival. Ever since 2004, his cinematic works have been screened at multiple esteemed international film festivals, including the Locarno International Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, and the New Currents section of the Busan International Film Festival. His exceptional achievements have earned him the title of Best New Director in Asia. In 2021, his latest film, "Yanagawa", which he both wrote and directed, was bestowed with the remarkable honor of winning the Best Small and Medium Budget Feature Film Award at the distinguished 35th Chinese Film Golden Rooster Awards. Moreover, his recent creation, "the Shadowless Tower" (2023), has also been selected for the main competition of the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival and went on to receive five Tiantan Awards at the Beijing International Film Festival.

"Wherever life takes me, I'll capture every single moment with it." For the past twenty years, audiences have been wandering after the delicate steps of director ZHANG Lu. In his films, people we meet come and go, telling their own stories of love, life, and also, of constant wandering. Beneath the jerky frames, people of different ethnicities and nationalities in films strive for a better living, wavelessly and soundlessly, leaving their bitter-sweet vicissitudes freely flowing to be seen. MasterClass with ZHANG Lu - be ready to pack up your bags and set off on the next journey of wandering.

This year, his film “Small, Slow but Steady” was selected into the inaugural lineup for SIFF’s “VIVA LA FESTIVAL” section. As the audience of his films, we hear the melodious anthem for youthfulness from the birds and feel our eyes brimming with tears from the determined, once hesitant pugilist. These are not only the stories of Miyake’s characters, but the stories of every one of us. SIFF MasterClass with Sho Miyake: we resonate through films, and we connect through conversations.
