The 25th SIFF Introduced Highly Anticipated SCI-FI FILM WEEK

2023-06-01

Science fiction films, playing a key role in building cinema strength for our country, also represent an essential sector for the development of China's film industry. In 2023, to respond to the 10 Policies for Sci-fi Films, the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) will launch for the first time the SCI-FI FILM WEEK as a key practice for making Chinese science fiction films a core force in the sector of science fiction films across the world with international vision and platform-based influence through the bond of science fiction films.

The SCI-FI FILM WEEK is a combination of thematic screenings and thematic forums. The thematic screenings include three themes: A TRIP TO MARS, RETRO and FORWARD, with a total of 11 films to be screened. They will not only pay attention to the development of science fiction films in the world, but also highlight the exploration of science fiction films by early Chinese filmmakers.

From the specially curated A TRIP TO THE MOON and THE HUMAN APOCALYPSE to this year's SCI-FI FILM WEEK, SIFF has always strived to present a number of unforgettable science fiction masterpieces to audiences. This year, three films from the RETRO unit, DEATH RAY ON CORAL ISLAND, DISLOCATION and WONDER BOY, will be screened outdoors at the drive-in cinema at Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden to meet the needs of both science fiction and popular cinema fans.

This year, the three sci-fi film themed forums have been incorporated in the SIFFORUM, including the SCI-FI FILM WEEK Keynote Forum and Shanghai Hi-Tech Films and Televisions City Press Conference, the Science and Film Fusion Forum and the Film Technology Forum. At that time, distinguished creators of science fiction films from home and abroad, science advisors, industry representatives and other guests will gather in Shanghai to interpret the international vision and context behind the development of science fiction films and discuss the development path of Chinese science fiction films.

The main visual poster of SCI-FI FILM WEEK, themed "The Starry Eye in Shanghai", was released at the same time. In the vast and mysterious starry sky, this eye takes in the colorful and futuristic Shanghai cityscape. "The Starry Eye in Shanghai" signifies that SCI-FI FILM WEEK will bring together top international science fiction filmmakers to explore the future narrative and industry development for sci-fi films with an international mindset and a visionary deployment.
